The owner of a Podhale sheperd must be aware of several things:

  • The Podhale Sheperd is not a « teddy bear » but a protection dog with a determined character .
  • The Podhale Sheperd has a memory like an elephant, beware not to make him disliking you, he would remember years later .
  • The Podhale Sheperd feels responsible, he wants to decide by himself
  • This is not a dog for those who appreciate obedience, submission, and taming, he doesn't do anything by order, he does something only by conviction, or respect because he only thinks by himself and :

1. He will respect his owner only if this one is patient, full of confidence, without shouts, without screams, in the respectful accompaniment of his maturation. But it will not have to be forgotten that the master must become his "pack chief ", that his authority shall not be contested, and that a lax education will not be compatible with the very character of the Podhale Sheperd

2. . It is imperative to educate a Podhale Sheperd who must learn the rules of hierarchy as of its youth.

3. The Podhale sheperd is a dog that desocializes himself extremely fast , it is imperative to have some free time at least during the first year of his life in order to walk out with him at least twice a week downtown and let him «to be groped » by a lot of persons who are not members of the family

The Podhale Sheperd must live free, free of his time and his moves so that his senses of observation, reflexion and action can express themselves.
This is not an appartment dog, a ground is essential for him.
He needs some light, sun, air, wind, and rain on his coat for this one to be beautiful, he must be able to run and jump whenever he wants so that his skeletal structure and his musculature develop.
His affection for " his pack " is not compatible with a kennel life, because he would suffer from feeling useless.

When he doesn't any herd to guard anymore, the podhale sheperd becomes attached to this new herd: the family unit. He turns to be then a very close companion to his masters, even sometimes a little bit intrusive, indeed clinging, extremely loving.

He feels unbounded fidelity to his masters, particularly watchful to children with whom he forges a special link, provided that this latter are educated in the respect of animal.
